What pops into your mind when you hear the word buzzworthy or even just buzz? Well for starters, when I hear the word buzz on its own, I think of bees swarming around a hive full of honey. If I think a little further I get an image of a busy New York street, a mall full of people, or even a festival/parade. These things also bring me back to the image of the bees buzzing around a hive of honey, the only difference is that they're people, and the honey is something that attracts them there. The honey in New York would be business opportunities, social opportunities, and entertainment. In a busy mall, it's the stores with the products and services they offer. A festival or parade has festivities, extravagant performances, or entertainment value. All these things are what we could call buzzworthy, because they attract a crowd of buzzing bustling people excited and active. So now let's put these images in the frame of business and word of mouth/buzz marketing. When we're trying to develop a viral marketing campaign, we need something buzzworthy. So let's look for some honey that'll get the bees swarming. Since we're probably not selling honey to bees, we'll need to find something that is sweet enough that will attract a swarm of buzzing excited customers for a feeding frenzy. This is where things could get challenging though. It would seem that there are so many products and services out there, with so many marketing campaigns, that the swarms have scattered and become uninterested. They've headed for the honey one too many times with the thought of how sweet it will be, only to discover a bitter muck or molasses at best. This causes them to become discouraged, untrusting, and wary of the next guy who advertises honey. Don't let this get you down, or stop you from releasing a product. The fact that there are so many dud products out there can be your opportunity to release a good one. According to the contrast principle, those dud products can actually boost your recognition just by your ability to be so much better than the competition. Now I can sense that some of you are probably thinking "How can I be sure my product is better than the competition?" It's simple; just make a product that is buzzworthy, which means making your product sweet enough to attract a swarm of buzzing customers. How? Through excellence! People talk and get excited about excellence, and that is buzzworthiness. Here's a breakdown of how to be sure your product is excellent. - Don't overhype your product and then underdeliver. You may get a swarm on the initial product launch, but when those buzzing bees find out that your honey is really molasses, the buzz will be silenced, and you can say goodbye to your customers, because they won't be coming back for more. Only amateurs focus on the first sale. - Give your customers a high return on their investment. This means deliver what you promised, at a fair price, and then overdeliver. Give them more than what they asked for. Add value to your product where-ever value can be added. Stick behind your product, give support for your product, guarantee your product or their money back, and tack on some bonuses for buying your product. - Create a good Unique Selling Proposition (USP). Your USP is an attention grabbing phrase that addresses a few of the following: What you're selling, how much, key benefits, &/or why buy from you. This is an important part of your product creation process and is best if it's short, sweet, catchy, and enticing. Pay attention to the word "unique" in there, because you need to have a unique quality that makes you stand out from the rest of the crowd. You also want to make sure that your USP is believable. Most people know the old saying "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is", and if that pops into their mind when they read your USP, then you're sunk. Hype your product, and then overdeliver! Excellence is buzzworthy, and if you go that extra mile for your customer, and if you exceed their expectations, then they will be excited about you and your product, and they will tell others about it. Q) What is buzzworthiness? A) Buzzworthiness is something that is buzzworthy. Q) How do we judge what's buzzworthy? A) If it's buzzworthy, then it will create a buzz. Q) What defines a marketing buzz? A) If customers are excited about a product, telling others about it, and coming back for more with a swarm behind them in a feeding frenzy. So there you have it folks. I hope this gives you a better idea of how viral/word of mouth/buzz marketing works, and how you can create a buzz with your product/service. Just one more key to note is that you should study the concept here, then innovate, and improve upon it. Some of the biggest buzzes I'm sure are still to come, and you might just be the one to start them buzzing.

There s more to marketing roi return on investment than meets the eye
: All too often people look at marketing ROI in terms of response rate: in other words, “I sent out 10,000 pieces of direct mail and only got 39 responses which is terrible.” This is wrong think. When it comes to marketing ROI, you have to realize that the term means Return On Investment and the return is measured in dollars (or your local currency). Let’s say you spend $2,000 to get out a bulk mailing of 5,000 pieces and you get 10 calls as a result. Doesn’t look like much. But of these 10 calls you close 6 and get immediate sales of $12,000. That’s marketing ROI! And that’s not even taking into account the future sales to those 6 new customers. It could add up to hundreds of thousands of dollars. The same simple mathematics apply to any other marketing efforts: radio ads, press releases or articles in magazines, print ads, yellow pages, web site, etc. Obviously you need to keep track of response from each marketing campaign you do so that you can weed out unsuccessful campaigns and strengthen successful ones. Case in point: Jeff Lee, CFO of a very successful consulting company, Measurable Solutions, has adopted a successful small business marketing strategy based on direct mail marketing. Key elements are mailing out a newspaper and full color postcards. The design is done in house and the printing and mailing is done by a specialized postcard printing company. In his own words... “We get our best response from mailing out a newspaper and back it up with postcards. Depends on the postcards. Some postcards have pulled better than others. “The professionalism of the postcards is something that is effective: it gets attention, it keeps the image that we want to keep, it creates the reach, it creates the response and keeps our leads in a very high range. “We probably average around 7,500 post cards per week. Out of 7,500 post cards we’ll get in an average of 15-20 leads. Of the 15-20 leads at least a third of them come to our introductory seminar. So say 5 or 7 people show up and they pay $1,700 a piece. Off of that we close a further $30-40,000 for services. “The money we have put into the postcards is like a drop in a bucket compared to what we get back. We know that the more promotion we send out, the more return we’re going to get. It always works.” That is excellent marketing ROI. Measurable Solutions spend about $2,275 for 7,500 full color post cards. That includes printing, postage, mailing (including the mailing list). From that they get between $8,500 and $11,900 in immediate response for an introductory seminar and an additional $30-40,000 follow-up sales. Spend $2,275, earn $40-50,000. You don’t need to have majored in advanced math and rocket science to work that one out: that is what is meant by marketing ROI! Results of direct mail marketing vary from business to business but the principle holds and always works: if you send out enough promotion, you will make sales and maximize your marketing ROI. Don’t worry about response rate if your marketing ROI is high.

Keeping and bringing customers to your business
Business greeting cards are a clever way to introduce and keep contact with your potential customers. It is a perfect sales tool to open door with a prospective customer. There are times when you feel unappreciated. Ask yourself, how often do you feel taken for granted? Now think about your customers and ask yourself, how much are they worth to you? When you send well-presented greeting cards to your customers they feel that they matter to you. Most businesses focus on quality but remember that relationships make the difference. Keep in mind that people come back when they feel special. So get personal with your customers and they will reward you with more repeat sales and referrals than you can ever imagine. One of the good things about business greeting cards is that they last. When people receive cards from someone they don’t expect their curiosity is aroused. And after opening your card, chances are they would display it in their offices or living rooms. There are other reasons why business greeting cards are important in businesses. 1. Oftentimes, they are more effective than initial phone calls. By sending a greeting card you have a reason to make a follow up call a few days after the recipient receives it. 2. It is a good way to keep in touch without being too pushy. 3. The greeting card lets your customers know that you are always there when needed. 4. Your unique or humorous card will be too valuable to toss; thus, they will be a constant reminder that you sent them. For customers, business greeting cards also have advantages: 1. Your existing clients will think that you take time to think of them. 2. Greeting cards are a non-aggressive way of communicating. A greeting card will not interrupt their activities. 3. Your current and prospective clients will appreciate your effort to stay in touch with them. The idea is to keep your card short and to the point. Save the lengthy conversation for initial phone contact or meeting. Really, your greeting card can make your customers feel that you remember them and care about them. These little things are priceless. Just remember how much more difficult and time-consuming it is to find a new client rather than to keep a current one. In the end, taking time to contact your existing and potential customers will pay a lifetime dividend both personally and professionally.
