Artists biographies on film top movies about visual artists

Visual artists biographies is a popular theme in the movie world. Moviemakers have always been fascinated by visual artists biographies, especially if it includes struggle with insanity, drug addiction or social conventions. In addition, it gives them an opportunity to depict original or resurrected artworks on the big screen. Here you can read about some of the most interesting movies about visual artists biographies. Lust for Life directed by Vincente Minnelli in 1952 Vincent Van Gogh biography had gained several cinematic adaptations. Lust for Life with Kirk Douglas as the struggling artist is one of the most notable. The movie is based on a best selling book by Irving Stone, who also authored The Agony and the Ecstasy about Michelangelo, which also had appeared on the silver screen. If you are a fan of Van Gogh artwork, you would enjoy watching Last for Life, which features almost 200 of Van Goghs original paintings. However, if you are familiar with Kirk Douglas previous filmographic, seeing him as a tortured Dutch painter might take a little adjustment. Another recommended film about Van Gogh is Robert Altmans Vincent and Theo from 1990. Surviving Picasso directed by James Ivory in 1996 Like Van Gogh, Pablo Picasso image made him an iconic figure outside the artistic circles. While Van Gogh symbolizes the self destructive, manic depressive artist who achieves success only after his death, Picasso represents the misanthropic and womanizer artist. Picasso infamous relationship with women is the focus of this Merchant and Ivory film. The story is told from the eyes of Picasso mistress Francoise Gilot and features only reproductions of Picasso works. With Anthony Hopkins talent and his physical resemblance to Picasso, Surviving Picasso manages to create an unflattering portrait of an artist as a cruel, self centered genius. Girl with Pearl Earring directed by Peter Webber in 2003 Comparing to Van Gogh and Picasso, Vermeers biography is less known and less controversial. Therefore Girl with Pearl Earring is much more restrained and delicate. The movie focuses on a short period in Vermeers life in which he was painting the portrait of his young low class maid. Although Girl with Pearl Earring does not avoid filmic conventions by over dramatizing Vermeers painting process, the movie is worth watching if only for its artistic design, which success in evoking Vermeers perception of light and color. Basquiat directed by Julian Schnabel in 1996 The most common critique against movies that deals with visual arts is the way they depict the creation process. Therefore, there were big expectations from Basquiat, which was directed by the celebrated painter Julian Schnabel. Schnabel did well in depicting Jean Michelle Basquiat rise and fall story in less the predictable manner we have seen millions time before. However, the only reason to watch Basquiat is David Bowie plays the role of Andy Warhol. Frida directed by Julie Taymor in 2002 Like most of the visual artists who had their life story appear on the silver screen, Frida Kahlo carried an unusual biography, which includes bus accident, problematic marriage, and an affair with Leon Trotsky. Like Van Gogh, Picasso and Jackson Pollock, who was the subject of a biopic from 2000, Frida Kahlo was an icon long before Frida was released, but the 123 minutes film did help to strength her position as a feminist idol and probably the most famous woman painter of the 20 century. Frida tries its best to integrate Frida Kahlo life story with her painting and the result is very colorful and pleasant, but still does not stay far enough from the conventions of depicting artists on film.

Sexual health awareness and you

Modern society has adapted a very permissive view of sex that today's youth are more independent, expressive and liberated when it comes to sexual expression. In this high-tech culture where conventions do not necessarily become the rule, it is important to consider what lies ahead for you and for your loved ones, and how you can protect each other from getting sexually transmitted diseases. Sexual health is not just the absence of the disease or its dysfunction and infirmities. It is a state of physical, emotional, psychological and social well-being with regards to one's sexuality. Addressing sexual health issues involves a complex web of factors such as attitude, behavior, genes, environment, and economy. It also deals with sexual health problems such as STD, HIV, pregnancy, abortion, infertility, cancer, and a wide range of sexual dysfunctions. Those who are in a relationship must not consider an infected partner as being unfaithful. One must learn to practice a positive and respectful approach to sexuality and sexual relationships and this can be achieved if the sexual rights of every individual is respected and protected. As the clichй goes, “looks can be deceiving.” It's not easy to tell if the person beside you has STD, or other illnesses for that matter, just by the way that person looks and acts. There are STDs that are not accompanied by any obvious signs. Symptoms can be very subtle that the person infected may not even know it. Aside from your regular health check-up, it is very important that you should also take special attention in knowing your own body especially when you are healthy. So that if any changes take place such as skin infections or sores, as well as any unusual discharge or pain while urinating, it will be easier for you to recognize these signs and symptoms because you already know how your body is like when healthy. Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) are diseases caused by viruses, bacteria and parasites and can easily be transmitted through body contact during sex. There are at least 25 different sexually transmitted diseases which can be spread by sexual contact, including vaginal, anal, and oral sex. Sometimes, STDs take a long time to display any kind of symptoms. The following are some of the most common STDs that affect sexually active individuals: Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Bacterial Vaginosis, Crabs or Pubic Lice, Epididymitis, Genital Herpes, Genital Warts, Gut Infections, Hepatitis, Molluscum, Non-Specific Urethritis, Scabies, Syphilis, Thrush, Trichomonas Vaginosis, Balanitis. Sexual health awareness is very important in detecting and treating STD to avoid serious infections which can lead to long-term or permanent damage. Untreated STD may cause infertility and can be passed on from a pregnant mother to her unborn child. STD can be passed onto sexual partners easily and can aid in the transmission of HIV. Abstinence is the surest thing to avoid STD. But you don't have to be a killjoy just to be free of the dreaded STD. The practice of safe sex and sexual health awareness can greatly help in minimizing risk from STD. Always use condoms during sexual intercourse or dental dams for oral sex. Make sure to sanitize sex toys before and after use. Observe genital hygiene routines, as well as keep your hands clean at all times. Consult with your professional health care provider for sexual health advice on getting tested for STD.

The benefits of an amino acid supplement in building a healthy fit body

Amino acid supplements are vital to bodybuilding. Amino acid is what makes up protein, and protein is what feeds muscles. Amino acids are ingested with the food that we eat. Unfortunately, we really don't get enough amino acids from those food sources when we are trying to build muscle. Amino acids do more than just create and aid protein in the body. They also help the body to function properly. They are responsible for healthy muscles, hair, skin, nails, glands, and even healthy ligaments. Some important amino acids in bodybuilding include arginine, acetyl L-Carnitine, Glutamine, Glutathione, and many others. Most of the amino acids that we get from food will come from meats and dairy products, such as milk, eggs, and cheese. If the benefits of amino acid supplements in relation to bodybuilding aren't enough to convince you that you need those supplements, you might be interested to know that many non-bodybuilders take amino acid supplements as well. Amino acid supplements have been proven to be helpful when it comes to Alzheimer's disease, heart disease, bronchitis, cancer, chronic fatigue, depression, diabetes, emphysema, epilepsy, hepatitis, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, infertility, liver problems, osteoarthritis, Parkinson's disease, pain, rheumatoid arthritis, and so many other health concerns. Amino acid supplements are so beneficial that many doctors prescribe them to patients who are recovering from surgery or wounds. When it comes to bodybuilding, you can be sure that serious bodybuilders are loading up on as much amino acid supplements as is safe. This is because they have educated themselves to the point where they understand the true benefits of amino acid supplements to their bodybuilding efforts. When purchasing amino acid supplements, it is best to use caution, and to purchase supplements that cover a wide range of the amino acids that you require. Taking any one supplement in too high of a dosage can be detrimental to your health. Animal testing has shown that high dosages of certain amino acids can cause an altered mental state, a decrease in the immune system, and can even result in blindness. Unfortunately, high dosage tests such as these cannot be performed on humans, so we have no way of knowing how high dosages will affect humans. With that said, however, there have never been any reported problems associated with the use of amino acid supplements among bodybuilder or non-bodybuilders. If you aren't sure how much you should take, set up an appointment with your doctor, and let him determine what the safe levels are for you.

Research finds that 87 of consumers choose generic drugs

The researchers analyzed four drugs: Allegra, Arava, Amaryl and Zithromax. In the second half of 2005, each of these drugs run out of patent protection. Their generic equivalents were bought instead at an average factor of 87 percent within 30 days of the equivalent’s delivery at pharmacies. The research was organized by Medco Health Solutions Inc. based in Frankin Lakes, which is the biggest drug benefit management company in U. S. The company bargains for low prices of prescription drug on behalf of its customers. According to the study, Zithromax, the blockbuster of Pfizer Inc. with its annual sales of $1.85 billion was rapidly substituted at pharmacies by generic equivalent at a 90 percent rate just after it lost its patent protection in November. The study authors mentioned the substitution of Zithromax, an antibiotic for respiratory infections, as evidence that more and more doctors prescribe generic versions of brand name drugs more easily, even if it is about so-called acute care drugs, such as Zithromax. “The really good news is that these four generic medications are just the start. With a number of popular medications expected to move off patent in the next several years, we should see substantial prescription drug costs savings” - stated a Medco senior vice president, Dr. Glen Stettin. A spokeswoman at Medco, Ann Smith stated that more than 70 brand name drugs, including 19 blockbusters, are losing their patent protection within the next five years - with total yearly sales of $45 billion. If Medco’s study reveals a long-term trend, in the coming years consumers, employers and insurance companies will save billions of dollars in prescription drug - Smith said. The data met with enthusiastic reaction from consumer groups. “We hope the trend continues. It’s good for consumers,” confessed Bill Vaughan, senior policy analyst for an advocacy group, Consumer Union, based in Washington, D. C. Vaughan mentioned that past fears concerning the effectiveness and safety of generic drugs have apparently started to fade away as society has become more concerned about rapid increase of health-care costs. “The FDA approves these generic drugs because they have been determined just as safe and effective as their brand name counterparts, but you pay a fraction of the price,” Vaughan stated. “We think this is very positive and can save consumers literally billions of dollars in the next few years.” At the same time, large pharmaceutical companies have claimed that their brand name drugs will not be substituted by knockoffs as insurers and doctors realize that the brand name drugs guarantee better care and in consequence - save money. Hank McKinnell, Pfizer Chairman used that argument during last session with analysts in New York. “If you don’t like the high cost of health care, try the high cost of sickness,” McKinnell advised.

Ocd extreme rites of anxiety

While believing that a lucky dress will give you the confidence to make a good impression during a job interview would seem like a harmless superstition, the same is true with the ritual of most mothers who makes it a point to always check and re-check if the flat iron had been unplugged or the oven was properly turned off before leaving the house. Many of us have little superstitions and rituals which help us become productive and produce positive results. However, when these rituals are taken to extremes and begin to affect normal daily functions, it becomes a problem. The moment you start feeling that something will really go wrong simply because you are not wearing your lucky shirt --- you develop a form of paralysis, at least in the psychological sense. When you feel the need that lucky shirt all the time to prevent something from going wrong, then it's already as if the shirt has control over your life. This type of behavior, much like repeatedly checking if the flat iron was unplugged even if one has already double or triple-checked it, could be symptoms of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder or OCD. OCD is a mental health condition that creates a strong sense of uncertainty, doubt, anxiety, or fear in a person's mind and triggers rituals like re-checking and re-doing. Although sometimes, everyone may feel anxious, fearful, or worried, these normal emotions and reactions help people protect themselves, stay safe, and solve problems. These feelings usually don't last long and don't come too often. In the case of people with OCD, these feelings are taken to extremes as if the brain does not recognize what's dangerous from what's not. There is a constant and lingering stream of fear, doubt, or anxiety in the person's mind, instead of keeping normal worry under control. OCD is a type of anxiety disorder characterized by recurrent, unwanted thoughts known as obsessions; and repetitive behaviors, also called compulsions or rituals. People with OCD are pre-occupied with persistent thoughts that bring fear or worry about something that might happen. These negative thoughts and images are usually hard to shake off. They have a strong urge to perform these rituals or repetitive behaviors such as hand washing, counting, checking, or cleaning with the hope of preventing or getting rid of obsessive negative thoughts. The obsessions and compulsions are sometimes related to each other. A person who worries (obsession) about germs and about getting sick could have the urge or compulsion to wash hands or clean things often and repeatedly. They are too cautious to touch anything due to fear of germs. There are times when the compulsions or the rituals don't have anything to do with the obsessions or fear. For example, if things on the desk are not arranged properly, something bad will happen to a loved one. The oddity of the rituals and fear are so obvious that many people try to keep their OCD to themselves. Although doctors and scientists still don't know the real cause of OCD, recent research has shown that OCD is related to levels of a normal chemical in the brain called serotonin. When the proper flow of serotonin is blocked, the brain's “alarm system” overreacts and misinterprets information. Instead of the brain filtering out these unnecessary thoughts, the mind dwells on them and irrational fear and doubt is experienced by the person. There is strong evidence that OCD can be hereditary. Most people with OCD have one or more family members that also have an anxiety disorder. This disorder is often linked to unstable levels of serotonin in the brain. For this reason, scientists have come to believe that the tendency or predisposition of a person to serotonin imbalance that causes OCD is inherited or genetic. However, having the genetic tendency doesn't mean people will develop OCD right away. It only means that chances are greater that they might. An imbalance of serotonin levels can also result in other types of anxiety disorder. Like any other illness, having OCD is not the person's fault. There is nothing to be embarrassed about getting therapy treatments and counseling from a psychologist or psychiatrist. It may seem hard to stop doing rituals at first but eventually, people will begin to feel safe and stronger about dealing with their obsessions and compulsions.

In your skin some facts on the body s largest organ

The skin is the biggest organ in our body. It is the most important organ of all the other parts in the body, since this protects all the other organs working inside our bodies. Imagine what we would look like without it. Just muscles knitted over bones and organs. Scary, right? The skin is composed of three layers: the epidermis, dermis, and the subcutaneous fat. The epidermis is the outermost layer of the skin. This part also forms new skin cells. So what we are really looking at as skin would be dead skin cells, and at the base of it would be new skin cells waiting to move towards the top of the epidermis. There is a cycle when it comes to cell formation of the skin. Dead skin cells flake off, and new ones move towards the top. Ninety five percent of the epidermis cells are working on new skin cells, and the remaining five would make a substance called melanin. Melanin gives out skin color, as well as for protection against the sun's ultraviolet rays. The next layer beneath the epidermis is the dermis. This part contains all the blood vessels, nerve endings, sweat glands, and oil glands needed for the skin. Nerve endings in the dermis will give out messages to the brain and tell how things feel when you touch them. The blood vessels keep the skin cells healthy by giving out oxygen and nutrients and taking away other waste. Oil glands that are present in the dermis produces sebum, the skin's natural oil. It keeps the skin protected and lubricated. The last layer would be the subcutaneous fat. It absorbs shocks and helps keep your body stay warm, and also helps in holding all the tissues underneath it. This is also the part where the hair follicle starts. Each follicle starts here and ends up at the top of the skin, where hair is becomes visible. It is essential to keep the skin as healthy as possible. This particular organ protects our bodies, grants us the sense of touch, and keeps our bodies at the right temperature. Since it is prone to several diseases, it is important to keep in mind good skin care solutions for healthy skin. Basic skin care solutions consists of having a good soap and cleanser that is suited for your skin type, using moisturizers, and sun protection. All these are sensible for the health of your skin. It helps in maintaining the skin clean, healthy, moisturized, and protected from harmful UV rays. Unfortunately for some, they may experience certain skin illnesses during their lifetime. In line with this, skin care treatments are readily accessible for people suffering such illnesses. Nowadays, laser and light treatments for the skin is gaining popularity since it is fast and effective. Another skin care treatment would be having cosmetic procedures. This kind of treatment helps in the lessening of fine lines, sun damage and eliminating minor scarsbination therapies such as using prescription creams and antibiotics are also under skin care treatments. By combining treatments, this can increase the effectiveness of the whole healing process. These are just a few of a lot more skin care treatments available today. Knowledge of proper skin care techniques and having the right tools will lessen your chances of contracting a skin disease. By having enough information on skin care solutions and treatments, you may be saving yourself AND your skin.

Health and fitness for people above 50

Most aging adults don’t get enough physical activity. Exercise, though, can improve health impairments and prevent some diseases. It can also improve mood and emotional well being. The keys, though, to a sensible senior workout are to take it slowly and keep it up. Older people need to find a realistic mild to moderate enjoyable program. Let me give you 8 important reasons why You should work out. 1. Sleeping Aid for Seniors Because exercise effects the body is so many positive ways, it is clearly the most natural option for helping address sleep related issues. Regular exercise will first of all help tire the body physically, ensuring a natural form of fatigue that the body will address with a need to get appropriate rest. 2. Strength Training = Strong Bones A critical aspect of aging is the general weakening of both muscle tissue and our bones themselves. One of the surest ways to reduce the stress on our weakening bones is to increase our muscles mass through strength training. Strength training has repeatedly been shown to be a safe and effective method of reversing muscle loss in the elderly 3. Strong Heart People who exercise vigorously and often will reduce the risk of heart disease the greatest, but studies also show that any exercise can be beneficial. Studies have found that moderate exercise is also beneficial for those people with existing heart disease. 4. Arthritis Help Arthritis is defined as the inflammation of a joint, but it can certainly seem more painful than that. It can cause searing pain that leaves the body feeling weak for days. As people age, arthritis tends to develop from the extended every day uses of the body. Exercise, though, can assist with arthritis by strengthening the muscles near the joint which helps reduce joint stress. While exercise is necessary for everyone, it is essential for those with arthritis 5. 58% lower risk for Type 2 diabetes A study reported a 58% lower risk for Type 2 diabetes in adults who exercise for as little as 2.5 hours a week, even if the exercise was of a moderate level. People with diabetes are at high risk for heart disease, so the protective effects of aerobic exercise on the heart are very important for people with Type 2 diabetes. Initial indications are that strength training to increase muscle mass and reduce patient fat is also helpful for people with diabetes. 6. Increased Overall Fitness Being physically active appears to stimulate immune cells that target many viruses and infections. Though exercise appears to stimulate such cells, that stimulation appears to last only a few hours. However, regular exercise appears to lower the overall risk of being susceptible to the flu, colds, and other viruses. 7. Increased Stamina and Slowing the Aging clock Physical fitness allows the body to perform to its full capacity. Fitness helps us appear, feel, and act to our full potential. Exercise is essentially the capability to complete everyday responsibilities energetically and actively, with energy remaining at the end of the day for appreciation of other activities. 8. No Brain Drain How many times do you hear yourself or other seniors say, "Sorry, I'm just having another senior moment?” Many seniors are making exercise more of a habit so their sharp and educated minds don’t suffer. Studies across the country are showing that seniors who exercise their bodies have the least trouble exercising their minds For more information You can download free Ebook at lifestyledecision/senior. pdf

How to lose man boobs 2 ways to lose man boobs more effectively

I have tried almost everything and spent countless dollars in the bid to lose my man boobs and gets my self-esteem back, including all sorts of diets, exercises, drugs, anything short of surgery. Whatever the cost, I will consider it if it can help me lose my man boobs. I devoted a lot of my free time to the study on the subject of exercise, bodybuilding and nutrition, and despite this, I wasn’t able to gather much information on the subject of man boobs reduction. You see, man boobs sufferers are few and rare. Most of the fitness experts I’ve read about never had man boobs in their entire lives. They are merely talking about the subject from an outsider point of view. Having been through the long and hard process of losing my man boobs, I have to say that losing man boobs isn’t as simple as following a standard “fat-loss” diet and exercise regime. Although diet and exercise are crucial to the success. Most sufferers missed out a key part of the equation, and that is hormonal balance. Low testosterone production is one of the major contributors to the man boobs problem is. This makes you more feminine which causes your body to deposit the more fat on your chest. As I already mentioned, diet is one of the key drivers to losing man boobs. Diet in this case isn’t simply about watching what you eat. You should strategize your meal plan around alkalizing your body and boosting your metabolism. The other key driver is exercise. The workout plan should place greater emphasis on testosterone boosting exercises. Correct use of exercises such as the weighted squat can accomplish the purpose. Warning: Overtraining can lower your testosterone count. So don’t run to your local gym immediately and start pumping out 1,000 squats. Invest in great resources on the subject if you are unsure. Man boobs have caused me great embarrassments and have made me lose many of the joy in this world. I was ridicule through the entire education system. Friends and even family members will make fun of me whenever they have had the chance to. Even when I take my shirt off in a public men’s locker, people will stare at me, although “not” deliberately. I understand your problem. Even today, in the days of the Internet, where there is immense information on any subject, this is one area which has not been really well addressed, and there are only a few great products on losing man-boobs. Currently, I am giving away a free guide on losing man boobs on my website. You can access the link to my website in the author’s box below. Thank you for reading.

Spotting cocaine addiction

Addiction is a nasty word that many people find very difficult to confront. Usually it is because they are addicted or they know or suspect a loved one of being caught in the trap of addiction. It is not always easy to confront things like addiction. With some people, addiction might take the form of "they have to have their fix now" while others have an urgency to get out and meet with their friends because they're going to get high together. Whichever form of addiction it is, the social addiction or the craving for the drug addiction, it is something that needs to be addressed and resolved with urgency. Why is cocaine addiction so serious? To give it to you straight, it is a powerfully addictive drug and it can kill! Cocaine is a strong central nervous system stimulant that interferes with the reabsorption process of dopamine, a chemical messenger associated with pleasure and movement. The buildup of dopamine causes continuous stimulation of receiving neurons, which is associated with the euphoria commonly reported by cocaine abusers. Cocaine addiction cannot be ignored or neglected. Regardless of how cocaine is used or how frequently, a user can experience acute cardiovascular emergencies, such as a heart attack or stroke, which could result in sudden death. Cocaine-related deaths are often a result of cardiac arrest or seizure followed by respiratory arrest. It is not a drug to be ignored, even if the addict is only using it socially. You never know if you're going to become addicted to it or not. Using cocaine takes many forms, including injecting, snorting or smoking. Smoking and snorting are far the most dangerous ways of using it but that does make any other way of using any less serious. Crack (smoking) has become a major problem in many American cities because it is inexpensive and easily transportable. It is sold in small vials, folding paper, or tinfoil. Resolving cocaine addiction speedily is of paramount importance if one is to rescue a loved one from its grips and the potential consequences. There are so many solutions out there though so what must you do to find the right answers? First of all, do not ever allow anyone to give your loved one drugs (meds) to handle the cocaine addiction. Using further drugs to resolve a drug issue is an absolute waste of time and, in fact, is counterproductive because you'll end up with additional dependencies. The second thing is not to allow anyone to "evaluate" about the reason he got addicted in the first place. This includes even family members. No-one but the addict himself knows the reasons for his addiction, be it the desire to fit in with the crowd or be it an inability to handle a family difficulty. Full cocaine addiction treatment is not merely just getting the person off the cocaine physically, it includes the person himself finding out for himself why he got addicted in the first place and, using the correct educational tools, to work out what the difficulties were and how to resolve them so that he can get back into the life-stream again and become a valuable member of society and achieve his personal goals.

Folding mobility scooters how to bring more independence to your life

Having trouble simply walking is bad enough. It’s even worse when you require family, friends and nurse aids to do your shopping, errands or to even get you around your home. Feeling like you’ve lost your independence is a hard pill to swallow. Luckily it doesn’t have to be that way anymore. That’s because more and more people are learning about “folding mobility scooters.” Now a mobility scooter is an electric powered scooter that has either a three-wheel or four-wheel base. It’s the perfect mobility aid for people who have trouble walking. Better still, if you are still independent and would largely like to remain so, having what’s called a folding mobility scooter is a blessing. Actually, many models of mobility scooters today break down into individual, lightweight parts, allowing you to put the scooter in the car or in the back of your min-van or SUV. The drought within dry mouth and its effects

It is not a particularly nice feeling to wake up with a dry and sticky feeling in your mouth. It’s annoying and can possibly lead to a lot of different complications once left untreated. But what really is dry mouth? Dry mouth More commonly called as xerostomia by medical professionals, dry mouth is basically a condition where there is a lack of saliva in the oral cavity. It is colloquially called pasties or cottonmouth. In itself, it is not a disease, but rather a possible symptom of some other condition. Causes: 1. Medications. Some medications may have side effects of dry mouth. Prescription medications for depression, anxiety, pain; and illicit drugs like cannabis and methamphetamines may cause dry mouth. 2. Radiation therapy. This procedure may affect the salivary glands and its functions. 3. Diseases and infections. Dry mouth can be a side effect of underlying medical conditions and infections like: Sjцgren's syndrome, HIV/AIDS, Alzheimer's disease, diabetes, anaemia, cystic fibrosis, rheumatoid arthritis, hypertension, Parkinson's disease, stroke, and mumps. 4. Depression and anxiety. Studies have shown that people who are depressed and/or have anxiety disorders generally have low rates of salivary flow. 5. Trauma to the salivary glands, or the surrounding nerves and ducts. This causes disruption to the salivary glands’ functionality and may cause lesser saliva production. 6. Dehydration. Water loss in the body may cause dry mouth. 7. Too much mouth breathing. Air entering through the mouth into the throat dries up the saliva in the oral cavity. 8. Too much physical activity. A lot of elderly people say that they get dry mouth after engaging in physical activity or staying under the sun for quite a while. 9. Aging. The body produces less and less saliva as we grow old. Signs and Symptoms · Difficulty eating, speaking, and swallowing. This is due to the lack of saliva in the mouth. Our saliva is meant to protect and lubricate the oral cavity. A shortage in saliva may mean loss of lubrication and therefore make it difficult for movement during eating, swallowing and speaking. · Taste disorders. Scientifically called dysgeusia, this occurs when dry mouth is caused by damaged salivary glands, nerves and ducts. Sufferers may describe their food as having either a really strong taste, a “wrong” taste, or having no taste at all. · Tongue pain. This is characterised by having a burning or tingling sensation on the lips, tongue or · Increased thirst. Since the oral cavity has lost its natural lubricant, the body starts craving for more fluid intake. · Mouth sores. Especially within the corners of the mouth. · A sticky, dry feeling in the mouth and throat. · A dry, red, raw tongue. · Hoarseness, dry nasal passages and sore throat. · Bad breath. Treatment At the moment, a final cure for dry mouth is not possible. However, treatment is mainly for keeping the teeth and the oral cavity in good shape and relieving the feeling of dryness in the mouth. · Make constant visits to the dentist for oral check up and prophylaxis. · Pay close attention to your oral hygiene. · If the use of antihistamines or decongestants is required, check for those that don’t cause dry mouth. · Increase fluid intake. · Chew on medicated gum. · Use carboxymethyl cellulose saliva substitute as a mouthwash. Complications: Leaving xerostomia untreated may lead to several other complications, simple and otherwise. 1. Gingivitis. (inflammation of the gums) 2. Tooth decay. 3. Mouth infections. (oral candidiasis or yeast infection) 4. Halitosis. (bad breath) People may consider dry mouth an ordinary occurrence and put off having it checked for later. This is not a good idea because as it was mentioned earlier in this article, this may already be warning signs of certain diseases. Also, if left untreated, it may start causing you problems. If you start noticing any of the symptoms mentioned above, go have a talk with your doctor. Immediate action may save you from having more trouble in the future.

The magic of lasik vision correction

It almost seems surreal. You walk into your doctor's office wearing your glasses or contact lenses, you receive numbing drops, and within a few minutes, your vision has been restored to what it was when you were 20 years old. You can walk out of the doctors' surgery in half an hour, leaving your contacts and glasses behind! With Lasik vision correction most people can say goodbye to glasses forever. It's amazing to imagine that a cool laser can actually change the shape of the cornea in your eyes. However that's just what it does. The doctor will lift a small microscopic flap from your cornea and direct the laser beam to actually reshape the cornea so that light can be reflected more effectively. What this does is allow the eye to see properly again, eliminating the need for glasses or contacts. Laser vision correction is very popular among actors who don't like to be seen on screen wearing glasses. It is also a very common procedure for sports people and athletes, particularly those relying heavily on their eyesight... golfers and shooters for example. It is important to find a doctor who will take the time to explain the procedure in full, and answer all your questions. Some questions that you may like to ask include: 1. What percent of patients achieved uncorrected visual acuity? 2. How long has the surgeon been performing refractive surgery? Should be at least 3 years 3. How many laser procedures has the surgeon performed? Should be over 500 4. How many operations has the surgeon performed similar to yours? Should be at least 100 5. Has the surgeon ever had his malpractice insurance denied? 6. Has your surgeon ever had their license to practice medicine revoked? While these may seem to be very direct and possibly even rude questions, just remember, this doctor is about to perform very invasive surgery on your eyes. First performed about 1985, lasik surgery has certainly come a long way! What is now an outpatient procedure has opened up a whole new world of clear vision for those who wish to use it. It's important to take extra special care with one's eyes after the surgery, so that the risk of infection or any possible complication can be kept to an absolute minimum.

High blood pressure on the sunny side of the street

It is one of those situations where, after examining the facts, you almost feel like you are caught between a rock and a hard spot. Or perhaps better yet between the shade and the sun. For many years now the public has been cautioned against excess amounts of sun exposure. And clearly there is truth behind this. Skin cancer is a very real risk, and precautions such as sun block and long sleeved clothing should be taken when going out in the sun. Yet just as it is generally advised that you should not lay unprotected on the beach for hours at a time, summer after summer, it is steadily becoming more apparent that a lack of sunlight can have very negative, far-reaching consequences on your health as well. In recent years numerous well-respected studies, such as one carried out by the University of Maine, have shown that lack of sunlight may in fact be the cause of, or a large contributing factor behind, some people’s high blood pressure. Probably the most well-known health problem that can stem from a severe lack of sunlight is vitamin D deficiency, often seen in the form of rickets. This condition occurs because the human body produces its vitamin D through sunlight expose (it can also be obtained through artificial ultra violet light, supplements and some foods). Much like trees and greenery, humans need vitamin D to thrive and develop properly. We have millions upon millions of red corpuscles that flow continually through the blood vessels in every part of our skin. Tucked away beneath these vessels are little oil glands that are called sterols. When sterols are exposed to sunlight a substance inside of them is changed and it turns into vitamin D. This vitamin D is in turn carried to every part of your body, including your heart, kidneys and blood. With the help of vitamin D your kidneys are able to create a hormone called rennin. This useful hormone is an important helper when it comes to regulating blood pressure. In the liver it helps to produce a substance called calcidiol, which in turn creates calcitriol. This substance helps to control your metabolism’s calcium levels. This is a very imperative function as the effects of this transformation stem as far as lowering your risk of certain diseases and managing things like your insulin levels and autoimmune system. In fact low levels of vitamin D have been linked to many conditions including SAD, osteoporosis, osteomalacia, hypoparathyroidism, colon cancer, MS, and even diabetes, so it should come as no surprise that it can also be a contributing actor behind high blood pressure. For over fifty years scientists and physicians have been aware of the reality that exposure to ultraviolet light (which can be obtained from sunlight or through manmade lights) can lower blood pressure in people who have “average” blood pressure levels, and significantly lower levels in those with high blood pressure. Does this mean that if you have high blood pressure you should spend hours a day completely exposed to the sun? No, but more and more researchers are finding that even small doses of sunlight (which can be taken in while wearing sunscreen) are good for you. It has even been put forth that sunlight through your eyes can help with vitamin D problems too. In this modern world of continual “indoor-ism” and hectic schedules it can be hard to find time or ways to get enough vitamin D. Supplements are one answer, artificial ultraviolet light another (this route is often used to treat SAD), and natural sunlight in reasonable amounts in another. But with all the potential good that a little sunlight now and than can do for you one can’t help but wonder if it’s time to take a walk on the sunny side of the street. Who knows, your blood pressure may thank you for it.

Low carb alcoholic drinks uncovered

How to find an enjoyable, low-carb alcoholic drink is something on the minds of many. The recent popularity of low-carb diets put a new focus on carbohydrates in foods. In an effort to capitalize on this situation, dozens of books have been published touting everything from easy, low carb-recipes to how to find a good low-carb friend and live the low-carb lifestyle. One area that causes concern for low-carb dieters is pressure and influences arising from social situations. A big part of any social occasion – and many other occasions – for many people is alcoholic beverages. Do alcoholic drinks have many carbs? What sort of drinks should I avoid? Should I abandon drinking altogether? Is there such a thing as a low-carb alcoholic drink? Fortunately, little sacrifice must be made for the sake of counting carbohydrates. There are enough options and alternatives to allow you to enjoy good beer and other alcoholic beverages. Of course, as with anything else, you just need to make smart choices that fit into your particular low-carb diet and lifestyle. This article should serve as a general guide with basic information about low-carb alcoholic drinks. Folks who want to enjoy a nice, cold brew and still maintain a healthy diet have a good friend: low-carb beer. Despite what you might guess from witnessing certain new product launches and advertising campaigns, low-carb beer is nothing new. In fact, all light beers are low-carb; just recently have brewers started so vigorously publicizing that fact. Many people, even those on weight-loss and low-carb diets, enjoy beer regularly. Beer, like most other beverages, contains no fat. Light beer, in particular, is low in calories and carbohydrates. New low-carb beers, capitalizing on the terminology of the day, have been put to market in response to the new dieting trend, and often contain even less carbohydrates than light beer. When it comes to dieting and weight loss, the “beer belly” is often mentioned, but no such thing actually exists. Consuming too many calories and not exercising enough will cause excess fat to develop in any part of the body, determined mainly by gender and genetics; for the most part, beer is irrelevant. Most doctors agree the keys to weight loss are moderate food and beverage intake and regular exercise. Whether you’re on a low-carb, low-fat, low-calorie or some other type of diet, beer – especially low-carb beer – can be part of a healthy adult lifestyle. Beyond beer, there are many more options for enjoyable low-carb alcoholic drinks. Wine is very low in carbohydrates; red wine runs at about two grams, and white wine has a little less than one gram. Straight alcohols are even better. Gin, vodka, brandy, whiskey, tequila, rum, bourbon – all of your favorites! – have no carbs. Mixed drinks – drinks that contain alcohol and a “mixer” such as soda or juice – are where you’ll find some carbs, though. The exact number, of course, will vary depending on what you mix the alcohol with. You should always use diet soda, and try your best to find low-carb alternatives to fruit juices. Many liqueurs have relatively high amounts of carbohydrates, and should be consumed sparingly if you’re watching your carb intake. Irish cream, amaretto, triple sec, cointreau and the like should be enjoyed at a minimum. The carb counts vary greatly. Bailey’s Irish cream, for example, has about six grams of carbs; amaretto, one of the highest, has about 17. As with anything else related to dieting, moderation and common sense are your best friends. Amaretto isn’t the devil. It just has a lot of carbs, so make sure you aren’t suddenly and accidentally carb-loading after two amaretto sours. You can still enjoy plenty low-carb alcoholic drinks – whether it be a low-carb beer, a nice white wine or a whiskey-diet – without sacrificing your low-carb diet.

What you should know about stomach gas problems

Although the mention of stomach gas problems, such as belching, flatulence, bloating and “gas pains” often elicits some degree of amusement, all of us have gas in our intestinal tract and must expel it in some way. Some individuals are very sensitive to the effects of gas collections in the stomach and intestinal tract and may develop significant discomfort. If such complaints are troublesome and persistent and do not respond to simple measures, such as change in diet, a visit to your doctor could be helpful. The gas brought back by belching comes entirely from swallowed air. We all swallow some air when eating food and drinking liquids. Most of the gas mixes with the stomach content and either enters into the small intestine or is belched back. The air that enters the small intestine is either absorbed or it may continue through to the large intestine and is then passed rectally. Individuals may swallow more air (and thus increase stomach gas) if they have a post-nasal drip, chew gum, have poorly fitting dentures, suck on hard candies or smoke tobacco. Drinking carbonated beverages (soda or beer) or eating rapidly can also increase stomach gas. The food we choose to eat can influence the amount of gas passed rectally. Although most of our food intake is absorbed in the small intestine, some foods, such as cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, baked beans, and bran are incompletely digested. They are then broken down by bacteria in the large intestine, causing the formation of gas. A high roughage diet is important to promote bowel regularity, but excessive roughage or fiber may lead to bloating and increased flatulence. When increasing the amount of fiber in your diet, do so gradually, allowing your intestinal tract time to adjust. Milk sugar (lactose) requires an intestinal enzyme (lactase) for digestion. When individuals lack this enzyme the lactose in milk and other dairy products enters the large intestine where the lactose is broken down by bacteria, producing gas. Although milk is an excellent source of protein and calcium, many adults experience abdominal bloating, gas and diarrhea after consuming milk sugar. Persons from Asia and Africa are often extremely intolerant to the smallest quantity of dairy products. Everyone passes some rectal gas, although the volume of gas is different each day. Much of the flatus comes from the nitrogen found in the air one swallows. The remainder of the flatus volume is the result of carbohydrates which are not absorbed in the small intestine and are broken down by bacteria in the large intestine. Therefore, the amount of flatus represents a combination of swallowed air and poorly absorbed carbohydrates. The unpleasant order of flatus is due to other gases, such as hydrogen sulfide, which is produced by the bacteria. Individuals with a long history of occasional gaseousness and abdominal discomfort need not seek medical attention. A change in the location of abdominal pain, significant increase in the frequency or severity of symptoms, or onset of new symptoms in individuals over the age of 40 are some of the reasons to see your doctor.

A successful weight loss diet starts from the inside

If you're like most women, you've been on a million weight loss diets, from Weight Watchers and Atkins to South Beach and celeb diets. You voraciously read magazines for their weight loss tips and gravitate toward the headlines that promise you can lose weight fast. The chances are good that you have, indeed, lost weight on many of these diets, but the chances are even better that you've gained it all back - plus some. Your skinny jeans become your tight jeans, and then they get tucked in the back of your closet, along with your fantasies of becoming a size 0. Weight Loss Diet Failure You've probably bought into the propaganda that says you've failed at dieting; a different - and more accurate - way of looking at it is that the weight loss diet has failed you. That's because most diets focus on short-term changes that result in temporary weight loss, but never tackle the underlying factors that make you put on the pounds to begin with. In other words, they focus only on the "outside" problem - your body - and neglect everything below the surface - your emotions, your intellect, and your relationships. A diet for summer might work for swimsuit season, but if you don't strengthen your foundations before you lose weight, those Diesel skinny jeans won't fit when fall rolls around. Turning Failure into Success In order to lose weight and keep it off, you need a guide who will lead you on an exploratory journey to discover the power and control that you possess. Then, you need to be taught how to harness those powers to achieve all that you want in life - including fitting into your skinny jeans. You may have been told - either verbally or through insidious advertisements - that if you don't have power over your eating, you have no power at all. Nothing could be further from the truth. Every woman is magnificent, and every woman has mental powers, emotional powers, social powers and physical powers just waiting to be tapped. When you heal your past wounds, and recognize and reinforce the power within you, you have laid the foundation for permanent weight loss. Practical and Fun If a weight loss diet is a drag, you'll never succeed in reaching your goals. On the other hand, if you have an empowering program to follow that is also practical and fun, you hold the keys to success. In fact, you can even drop a whole size in two weeks. The "secret" - if you want to call it that - is to adopt a well-tested exercise program that can instantly fit into your lifestyle. Remember, the success lies in simplicity, clarity, and practicality. Then, you need to adopt an eating plan that works synergistically with your exercise plan to build on the foundation of the inner work you have done in order to embrace your personal power. Remember that, with the right guide, you can do more than go on yet another weight loss diet; you can truly win in all areas of your life and achieve an outer beauty than matches your inner beauty.
